Lumiarwa Café interior

A Journey from Addis Ababa to Toronto

Lumiarwa Café was born from a dream that traveled thousands of miles, carrying the rich coffee traditions of Ethiopia to the vibrant streets of Toronto.

In 2018, Hanna Tessema left her homeland of Ethiopia with nothing but a suitcase full of family coffee recipes and an unshakeable belief that coffee could bring people together across any distance. Growing up in Addis Ababa, she learned the sacred Ethiopian coffee ceremony from her grandmother, Lumiarwa, whose name means "light of day" in Amharic.

After settling in Toronto, Hanna noticed something missing in the bustling café scene - the sense of genuine community that Ethiopian coffee culture fostered. People rushed in and out, phones in hand, missing the opportunity for authentic human connection that coffee was meant to facilitate.

The Birth of a Dream

In 2020, despite the challenges of a global pandemic, Hanna opened the doors to Lumiarwa Café on Queen Street East. The space was small, just 800 square feet, but it was filled with intention. Every element was designed to slow people down - comfortable seating arrangements that encouraged lingering, no WiFi passwords on tables to reduce screen time, and the gentle aroma of freshly roasted beans that seemed to whisper, "Stay a while."

The café's signature Lumiarwa Blend became an instant favorite, a carefully crafted combination of single-origin Ethiopian beans that told the story of ancient coffee growing regions. But it wasn't just about the coffee - it was about recreating her grandmother's philosophy that coffee is a bridge between souls.

Our Core Values

Community First

We believe every customer is a neighbor, every conversation matters, and every visit should feel like coming home.

Ethical Sourcing

We work directly with Ethiopian farmers, ensuring fair trade practices and sustainable growing methods that honor the land.

Slow Coffee Movement

In a world of instant everything, we champion the art of slowing down, savoring moments, and truly connecting.

"When you drink coffee at Lumiarwa, you're not just enjoying a beverage - you're participating in a tradition that spans centuries, connecting cultures, and creating new stories that will be passed down through generations."
